As expected..good shaved ice. A lil too sweet and each topping is extra charge. But give it a try for a sweet and cool treat!

Can we please celebrate all small and local businesses? Whenever I'm driving down School Street, this is the spot that I'm always tempted to visit even when the weather is junk outside. Shimazu never disappoints as a family run business that has the extra charming feeling that holds quality experience and quality ingredients. This place is surely one of da kindest kine, so friendly, fast, and family forward :)

Usually when we are in Waikiki on vacation, we drop by the Castle Street location but decided to check out the one on N School as we were closer to that one at the time. Its off the H1 on the corner of N School Street and Frog Lane. Now there isn't a parking lot like the other location so you'd have to do street parking here. Not a big deal since we have been twice and street parking is pretty easy that times we have gone. There is a nice selection of flavors for shaved ice just make sure you follow the directions on ordering when you get there by letting them know how many you want, sizes, if you'd want anything on the bottom, toppings and flavors. Other than the usual shaved ice, they also do Halo Halo! Nobody could agree on flavors to share so we all got our own. The one I ordered was a small with vanilla ice cream on the bottom, flavors were ube cream, guava, and I think it was melon cream. On a warm day, it was an enjoyable visit having some legit shaved ice that was nice and soft. None of that hard shaved ice stuff. Flavorings added to our shaved ice was generous and fully covered. We all topped ours with condensed milk which makes it even better! There aren't tables outside but they do have a bench you can sit out on and enjoy your cool, sweet treat! The person assisting us was quick taking the orders and getting them out there. I've been to many shaved ice places but Shimazu is definitely one of the best! I was so happy that they had an ube cream flavored syrup as I've never seen it before and its delicious! Prices are reasonable too. If you happen to be in that area or even the one off of Castle Street, give them a try if you haven't yet!

I got a large shaved ice for $7 with ice cream at the bottom (+$1.50) and haupia drizzle on top (+$1.25). It does get a bit pricey with all the add-ons, but it was a refreshing treat for a hot, humid day. The shaved ice was soft and enjoyable. You can choose up to 3 flavors, and they were very generous with the syrup. It was probably a bit too much for me, as it pooled at the bottom of the bowl shortly after receiving it, making it too sweet for my taste. Still, I appreciate that they don't skimp on the flavor. You place your order at the store-front counter, and there's a small bench you can sit on after you get your shaved ice. The workers are efficient, and the service is quick.

Well, I haven't been here in years! Shave Ice has gotten fancy with a lot of add ons and costs a lot more but so worth it every once in awhile. The girl was so sweet and patient with us old folks who didn't know what we wanted.

We parked along School Street and walked up to the counter. We ordered the medium shave ice with mochi balls. Additional bottom add-in choices were ice cream and azuki beans. Topping included condensed milk, li hing powder or haupia. Flavor choices were the last step with over 70 to pick from. We just sat on the bench out front to eat our shave ice which was typical for many of the shave ice places. Other customers who parked right in front just ate in their cars. Overall the shave ice was powdery and soft. The orange cream and ube flavors were great choices as they were very distinct and spot on flavors. Unfortunately these two flavors overwhelmed red watermelon but it was still good. Mochi balls were actually squarish but was soft and chewy. A nice refreshing afternoon snack and our favorite shave ice spot this trip.

Great place to get your shave ice fix. They have snacks and popcorn but the shave ice seems to be the popular item for both young and old. The workers are efficient and service is quick. This place is located on a busy street. There is a small bench to sit on but a lot of people just stand, talk story and eat their shave ice. thumbs

Shimazu is our go-to for shave ice in Honolulu. I grew up going to Waiola, Matsumotos and other spots, and I think nothing rivals the quality/quantity of Shimazu. Staff are always quick despite the lines. Know that there isn't any seating, but we're always happy to pop a squat on the curb with our cups. It's a spot you might miss walking down the street, but highly recommend for the perfect hit of shave ice, flavor saturated throughout (no un-syruped dry spots of ice here!)

We move to come here and get shave ice. It's perfectly showered with syrup. Parking is difficult; just hang nearby with one driver in the car.

Shimazu has always been my favorite shaved ice spot on the island. I've visited every time I've come to Hawaii to see my family so it has a special spot in my heart. Its family owned and all their syrups are homemade, every time I eat the shaved ice it always reminds me of good times as a kid. I'll always prefer Shimazu over the other well known shave ice places on the island and you can't change my mind. For some actual useful information: Metered parking only on the street, or you could try your luck at the foodland a block down. (Not responsible for anything if you choose to park there but I've done it before). They also have another location on Castle Street near Rainbow Drive in.
